Modern School is an English medium Pre-primary preparatory school with classes from Play Group to Kindergarten. The school was founded in 1953 by Mrs. Enid Isaac, B.A., B.T., (w/o Late Brigadier George S.Isaac), in a small way with only five students. It was the first English medium school in Barrackpore subdivision.
In the fifties and sixties the school catered mainly to the children of expatriate Britishers of the various jute mills and the officers of British Gurkha units posted in Barrackpore. Later children of Indian Army and Air Force Officers and from all walks of civilian life found it to be a good preparatory school.
Admission to the school is open to all without any bias of caste or creed. The main intake is in Lower Nursery (3+) for which forms are available from September. Admission to other classes is by admission test if and when a vacancy occurs.
Children who have a certificate of good conduct are welcome to apply for admission to the upper primary classes in our sister school Modern English Academy (a private unaided Christian higher secondary school, affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination, New Delhi).
Modern School celebrates its 70th year in 2023.
"This year has been a joyful journey of learning, growing and many special moments as our little ones took their first steps into the world of education.
This journey wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support of our teachers, who have lovingly guided each child with patience and care, and the encouragement of parents, who are the foundation of this nurturing environment.

We celebrate the milestones our toddlers have achieved and look forward to their continued growth"
"Our academic year is planned and implemented keeping the best interests and well-being of our little ones in mind. We ensure that the school is their second home-a safe environment where they learnt to read and write; always under the attention and care of their “mother” teachers. There was adequate ‘play time’ and ‘friendship time’ to socialize and make friends. Some of this was structured into their time table and some of it was in the recess where they socialize informally but always under the supervision of duty teachers.
The curriculum guarantees a solid foundation, which will stand them in good stead in the years to come. Each child’s progress is individually discussed and teachers are instructed to give personalized attention and care in order to bring out the best in each child. This is only possible because of the limited class size which we have maintained over decades.
It is never too early to learn good values. The grooming, etiquette and manners taught ensure our students learn skills to navigate interpersonal social situations. I cannot stress how important it is to learn to greet each other, thank each other, say sorry and accept corrections gracefully. Children must learn to be polite and respect each other- once it is ingrained they will always stand apart and shine!
We are preparing our children for a rapidly changing world. Skill and not knowledge will be the differentiating factor of success. We focus on skill building activities to ensure a solid foundation for our little ones."
"It is rightly said that learning promotes creativity, creativity leads to thinking, thinking gives knowledge and knowledge makes one wise.
In this one year children have grown and learnt so much. We start our day with the morning prayer and song followed by various activities planned for the day. We interact with them as their mother teacher.
They are taught to speak, colour, draw, write, count, recognise objects and recite poems with actions. They learn to eat and share their food with their friends. In the breaktime they all run and play on the swings and slides. They are taken out for games and nature walk They are told interesting stories. We try to inculcate good manners, habits and obedience.
Celebrations like School picnic , Children's Day, Teacher’s Day and Independence Day are held. Children enjoy it with great enthusiasm.
Competitions like Elocution, Fancy Dress and Art are held. Our little toddlers also participated and performed well in the Annual Concert. They really outdid themselves. Every year an Open House session for the parents to meet the teachers is held. After the Final Examination the children enjoy the ‘Fun Week’ with activities like craft work, games, story-telling and class party.
It gives us immense satisfaction to see our toddlers have learnt so much."
"As the saying goes, "Children are like saplings - tiny and fragile." At our Kindergarten, we take pride in nurturing our students to become strong and confident individuals.
Our day begins with morning prayer and singing the School Song, setting a positive tone for the day. As our children step into the new class, we engage them in various activities like reading, writing, and reciting, keeping them active and curious.
In this class, we introduce our young learners to fascinating topics such as celestial bodies, human body parts, and the wonders of flora and fauna. To make learning fun, we organize activities like crossword puzzles, creating the night sky in their copies, and planting gram seeds in colourful pots. Watching the tiny saplings sprout brings immense joy to our students!
Children also learn about Indian currency notes, calculations, and different shapes. Our Creative Writing week is a cherished event where children let their imagination fly by writing small paragraphs on their own.
Story time is a special part of our day, where we narrate stories and encourage role-playing to help our students understand moral values and develop their language skills. Our students also engage in craft work that not only sparks their creativity but also enhances their motor skills.
Each child is unique, with distinct interests, needs and talents. We encourage their independence of thought, reasoning and enquiry. The result is a vibrant showcase of their creativity ,reflected in the pages of this magazine. ‘Little Wonders' celebrates the diverse talents of our children, providing them a platform to express themselves.
We cherish the joy of celebrating special occasions with our little ones! On Independence Day, our young ones dress up in traditional attire and participate in festivities that include colouring the national flag, singing patriotic songs, and enjoying a captivating puppet show.
On Children's Day, the excitement is palpable as our tiny tots come dressed in vibrant colours and are treated to a special performance by their teachers. These celebrations create lifelong memories for our children.
Our Annual School Concert is a spectacular showcase of our students' talents in music, dance, and drama. They mesmerize the audience, displaying their skills with confidence.
We believe in making learning a fun experience. Our School Picnic and Fun Week are eagerly anticipated events, where children participate in nature walks, class parties, fancy dress competitions, craft-making, and games.
As our students step into the next class we extend our heartfelt gratitude to parents for their unwavering co-operation and support. We offer our best wishes for their continued growth, success, and happiness, knowing that the foundation laid here will serve them well in their future endeavours."
